BMW unveils it’s new self-driving concept car. The design of this vehicle is really stunning. I had to make a concerted effort to keep my mouth from gaping. I love the way it visually communicates the AI and various sensors required for self-driving vehicles. I have never seen anything like the covered wheel wells that morph to cover the turning tires. These types of videos really get me pumped about the future of vehicles.
Self driving cars are basically here now. BMW, Mercedes and Tesla have models out now that have various “driver assisted” features and would have much more if the regulations were caught up to the technology. Large companies like Google, Uber and other auto manufacturers have been testing these types of technologies in public traffic over the few years so it is only a matter of time before you can kick back and let your vehicle do the driving. Business Insider magazine predicts 10 million vehicles will have at least some sort of self driving technology in them by 2020.
The tests have shown that self driving cars will be safer then human due redundant systems and the lack of human error. This is contrary to the original notions that these types of cars would cause accidents due to failures. Safer cars mean lower auto insurance rates. This is great news for everybody.
